Can I have children if I have had scoliosis surgery?

Dr. James Mooney, III

Detroit, MI

Having scoliosis surgery is in no way a limitation to having children in the future. It is important to remember that if you are female and eventually have female children that your children be checked for scoliosis on a regular basis.

Dr. John T. Smith

University of Utah Department of Orthopaedic Surgery

Scoliosis surgery should not affect your ability to have children. As with all surgical procedures, however, there are risks and potential complications that you need to be aware of. Be sure to discuss these risks with your doctor.

Dr. Michael F. O'Brien

Denver Orthopaedics

Yes. Neither your sexual development, ability to have sexual relationships, or your ability to have children will be affected by scoliosis surgery.

Dr. Dennis G. Crandall

Mesa, AZ

Scoliosis surgery will not prevent you from conceiving babies, delivering babies, or raising them once they are born.

Dr. W. Christopher Urban

Glen Burnie, MD

Scoliosis surgery does not affect your chances of becoming pregnant or giving birth to a healthy child. The surgery is intended to stop progression of the curve. Pregnancy with a corrected curve should actually be easier than with an untreated severe curve.

Dr. Thomas G. Lowe

Woodridge Orthopaedics & Spine Center, P.C.

Absolutely. Having scoliosis surgery does not in any way affect having children. If anything scoliosis surgery for a lower curve will make having children much easier.

Dr. Frank J. Schwab

In general, having scoliosis surgery will have no affect on your ability to conceive or carry and deliver a healthy child.

Dr. Jean-Pierre C. Farcy

Dr. Baron S. Lonner

New York, NY

There is no reason that you cannot have children and have a normal pregnancy despite having scoliosis surgery. In fact, you are likely to have less pain having had surgery than if you had untreated scoliosis during your pregnancy. The C-section rate is no higher in patients who have had scoliosis surgery than compared to other prospective mothers.

Dr. Patrick Bosch

Albuquerque, NM

Yes - spinal surgery should do nothing to preclude normal pregnancy or child birth.

Dr. Robert W. Molinari

Rochester, NY
